FPC ROOFING PROJECT

Under the watchful eye of our Property Supervisor, Steve Margerum, our flat roof buildings underwent a well deserved upgrade in July 2021.

Legacy Giving

Live Forward. Give Forward.

This project is funded by our members, past and present, who have established their legacy here at First Presbyterian Church through special gifts and bequests, both large and small. It is these generous and kind donations that have allowed our church to ‘live forward.’ We thank each and every one.

Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. – II Corinthians 9:7 NIV

The Company: J. Wilhelm Roofing

has been in the roofing business since the mid-1920s. The company was founded by George W. Wilhelm around 1920 as a house painting business and it soon expanded into painting tin roofs and chicken coops, many of which still exist in the South Jersey area. George’s 3 sons continued the roofing trade into the early 1970’s.

The New Roof Process:

The process begins with a thorough cleaning of all the flat roofs. The next step is to remove all flashing from the roof walls. Then they will begin to remove all scupper boxes(roof drains) and enlarge the areas wall openings for proper drainage. The flat roofs above the school, kitchen, staff office, mission wares, and Van Camp porch roofs are having what is called TPO roofing membrane installed. TPO is a thermoplastic membrane with a fleece back that is applied over the roof that is already down. It is applied with a two part adhesive that expands when mixed. Then the TPO material is rolled on with a 180 pound roller. The roof above the Van Camp Porch and missionwares are being torn up and new decking will be installed followed by the TPO membrane. All of the flashing done around the building will be TPO material as well and then capped with new metal edging.

The final step is replacing all the scupper boxes with new TPO coated metal scupper boxes. Then a final inspection. The roof will be a great improvement for a multitude of reasons. TPO roofing is a bright white roof that can reflect UV rays and heat from the building, saving money during the summer months from decreased energy usage to cool the building interior.
